Crescent Cakes for the Full Moon

Crescent cakes are one of the most beloved traditions in Wiccan and Pagan practice. Shaped like the crescent or full moon, these buttery almond shortbreads are baked as an offering for Esbats and full moon ceremonies — and they happen to taste absolutely amazing. Whether you're placing them on your altar, sharing them with your coven, or sneaking a few while the moon rises, these little cakes carry centuries of magic in every bite.

Ingredients

• 1 cup finely ground almonds
• 1¼ cups all-purpose flour
• ½ cup confectioner's sugar (icing sugar)
• 2 drops almond extract
• ½ cup butter, softened
• 1 egg yolk

Method

1. In a large bowl, combine the ground almonds, flour, confectioner's sugar, and almond extract. Mix until thoroughly blended.
2. Using your hands, work in the softened butter and egg yolk until the dough comes together smoothly. This is a wonderful moment to infuse intention — knead slowly and mindfully.
3. Wrap the dough and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
4. Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
5. Pinch off pieces of dough roughly the size of walnuts. Shape each piece into a crescent moon or a small round full moon disc — let your intuition guide you.
6. Place on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes, until just lightly golden at the edges.
7. Allow to cool before handling — they are delicate and melt-in-your-mouth tender.

Ritual Use

These cakes are traditionally served during Esbats — the monthly full moon celebrations. Place a few on your altar as an offering to the Goddess, then share the rest with those gathered in circle. As you eat, give thanks for the fullness of the moon and the abundance in your life.

You can also dust them lightly with extra confectioner's sugar to mimic the glow of moonlight, or press a small edible silver star into the top of each one before baking for a little extra magic. ✨
