Granny McCoy's Pumpkin Pie

A Samhain Recipe — Makes 2 nine-inch pies

As the veil thins and Samhain draws near, there is no more fitting offering for your feast table than a warm, spiced pumpkin pie. This beloved recipe has been passed down through generations, and every ingredient carries its own magical resonance — making this pie as much a ritual as it is a meal.

The Magic in the Ingredients

  • Pumpkin — Sacred to the season of Samhain, pumpkin carries energies of prosperity, abundance, and protection. Its hollow form has long been used as a vessel for spirit work and divination.
  • Evaporated milk — Milk is a symbol of nourishment, the Goddess, and maternal energy. It connects us to the nurturing aspect of the divine feminine as she enters her Crone phase at Samhain.
  • Granulated sugar — Sugar draws in sweetness, love, and positive energy. Used in kitchen witchery to attract good fortune and soften difficult transitions — including the crossing of the veil.
  • Nutmeg — A powerful spice for luck, money, clairvoyance, and psychic awareness. Particularly potent at Samhain when the veil between worlds is at its thinnest.
  • Salt — One of the oldest tools of protection in witchcraft. Salt purifies, grounds, and wards off negative energy. A few dashes in your pie keeps the feast table cleansed and sacred.
  • Allspice — Associated with healing, luck, and money. Allspice carries a warming energy that supports courage and determination — ideal for facing the dark half of the year with grace.
  • Cinnamon — One of the most magically versatile spices. Cinnamon is used for passion, love, wealth, success, protection, and raising vibration. It accelerates the energy of any working it is added to.
  • Eggs — Eggs are ancient symbols of fertility, rebirth, and new beginnings. At Samhain, they represent the cycle of death and renewal — the promise that life continues beyond the veil.

The Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups cooked pumpkin (canned is fine)
  • 1¼ cups evaporated milk
  • 2½ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ heaping teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • A few dashes of salt
  • ¼ rounded teaspoon allspice
  • ½ rounded teaspoon cinnamon
  • 4 well-beaten eggs
  • 2 deep, unbaked nine-inch pie shells

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 375°F. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly and pour into two deep, unbaked pie shells. Bake for about 50 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out of the center clean.

As you mix, stir clockwise to draw in abundance and protection for the season ahead. Set your intention with each spice you add — this is kitchen witchery at its most delicious.
